GCSE ICT - dmbdwn2010
via edexcel.com
I went to the Edexcel ICT2010 launch event at a hotel in Leeds last week... and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They explained that they'd talked to lots of 14 year olds and they found the current GCSE 'boring' and 'difficult'. So they've come up with a new specification that drops all the hard stuff (building databases, learning how computers work, etc) and replaced it with Facebook, iPhones & online safety.
Teaching 14 year olds how to be 14 year olds. How is that preparing them for real life?
Unfortunately, that makes me somewhat redundant, since my 30 years of computing experience has little to offer students of this dumbed-down ICT course.
